The SPOT (Système Pour l’Observation de la Terre or System for Earth Observation) satellites are operated by SPOT Image (created in 1982), a subsidiary of EADS Astrium and based in Toulouse, France. The program was initiated by the French space agency, CNES (Centre national d'études spatiales) in the 1970s in collaboration with the Belgium (SSTC) and Swedish (SNSB) science and space agencies.

SPOT 1-3 satellite imagery acquired by the two High Resolution Visible (HRV) cameras. SPOT 1 was actively acquiring imagery from 22 February 1986 to 31 December 1990, SPOT 2 from 22 January 1990 to July 2009 and SPOT3 from 26 September 1993 until it stopped functioning on 14 November 1997.
